Prim and proper is what best describes this traditional event. The all England club is one of the most regulated Tournaments I have ever been to. The history behind this event can compete with most countries and even World War 2. With this being said, I can assure you that high socks and tattoo’s are not the best way to fly under the radar. Let’s face it, my name is Rob Steckley and flying under the radar is so last season.
If you book ahead of time, most of the lucky players such as us, rent out houses in Wimbledon village which is the little town the actual event is played in just 10 min outside downtown London. The town is made up of cute shops, restaurants and tennis enthusiasts by the dozens. The houses we rent out are these massively beautiful Old English homes that sit on beautiful country lots (there was an enchanted garden at our place with magical things I’m not aloud to speak of). It all just adds to the Wimbledon experience. We had the run of the house but needless to say Aleks Obviously called dibs on the best room. I however made up for it as I made her my personal butler. The only thing missing was her uniform which I will look into getting her next year. She is actually making me a sandwich as we speak but seems to be taking her time so she will receive 50 lashings. That’s just how it’s done around here ;)
Even though it’s an easy walk to the Wimbledon site we decided to take transport as this is now our 10th week on the road and even the simplest of things become tough at this stretch. A personal cavity search is how you are greeted at the doors before being aloud to enter the premise. Aleks seemed as if she wanted to go back for seconds? Everybody and their mother attend Wimbledon including the past, present and even future of tennis. Who would have thought the grounds would be all green? White, green and Steckley seemed to be the theme of the tournament, Federer who…come on.
There are over 25 courts on site. Half of them being match courts and the rest for practice. The new addition to this year’s event was the retractable roof on centre court which cost 80 million pounds to build. If I may, I would suggest, a massive skate park is also needed on the grounds…Just a thought, perhaps a wave pool…. Just thrown idea’s out there people.
Aleks played her first and only match unfortunately on show court 3. She played Scivonne of Italy, a tremendous athlete who played some tough tennis that day. With that being said, I also want to state for the record that I still don’t know if she is even human? Please Google her if you don’t know who I’m talking about send me an email with your thoughts. Very strong girl in a good way! The match started off in Aleks’s hands. She was moving the ball around well with a ton of pressure forcing Scivonne to make unforced errors. After taking the first set 6-3 Scivonne decided to turn it up a notch now turning the tables creating unforced errors from Aleks taking the second 4-6. The third was a battle between the girls. Aleks went up a quick break and held serve giving her a 2-0 and 40-15 chance at going 3-0 but was not able to convert. Scivonne came back hard, applying pressure at all the right moments. This gave her the edge in the end winning the third 6-4. I was proud of how Aleks fought. It has been an extremely long stretch for her and can use some much deserved time off.
We had a chance to do some site seeing and be tourist’s for once in the city of London. I managed to get attacked by two gypsies. I actually have the footage but cannot post it as the course language is strong. If they cast a spell on me I’m thrown that video up on you tube for sure to try and reverse the effect. Aleks and I both made love to our Amex’s….. As if we weren’t going to shop in London. Going to London and not shopping is the equivalent to eating cereal with no milk, can be done but I will just consider you strange. We were blessed with great weather in London and I can actually say I am going home with a tan to kick off my little vacation before Aleks and I start back up again in L.A at the end of July. We are filming a T.V show beginning of July in Toronto so be sure to check out my next article sometime after that.
